Abstrak

This study is a systematic literature review aimed at comprehensively synthesizing and analyzing empirical evidence on the relationship between self-discrepancy and adolescent mental health within the context of social media use during the period 2015–2024. The synthesis of ten selected studies consistently confirms that the gap between actual self, ideal self, and ought self significantly contributes to the emergence of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and diminished subjective well-being among adolescents. Identified moderating factors include gender, quality of social support, external environmental conditions, and the intensity of individual engagement within a rapidly evolving digital ecosystem. Findings over the past decade reveal a significant paradigmatic shift from individual clinical approaches toward a more contextual and holistic ecological perspective. The psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship involve shame and guilt as mediators that directly link self-discrepancy to serious clinical psychological disorders. This study underscores the urgent need for evidence-based preventive interventions that are adaptive to the evolving dynamics of adolescent digital identity in order to support their psychological well-being comprehensively and sustainably.
